The 2024 SHIFT Summit convening will be November 17-20, 2024 in San Antonio, Texas. Thank you to the San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department for being our 2024 host. Contact Dr. Teresa Penbrooke if you would like to be part of the organizing committee.

What is the SHIFT Summit?

A national gathering of great minds who care about improving the intersection of nature and preventive health for humans and lands. Attendees tend to be researchers, policy managers, health providers, planners, governmental, outdoor recreation, business, non-profit, military, foundations and philanthropic funders, educators, retailers, faith-based, conservationists, and/or nature-intervention professionals and organizations.

People who care come together to share stories, immersive experiences, evidence, programs, and ideas to help solve the natural conflicts that come when connecting more people into nature. We discuss the mental, cognitive, physical, and spiritual benefits nature can provide, while taking care of the lands at the same time. The Summit is based on sound peer-reviewed science and trends combined with experiential, health, stewardship, policy, practice, and management aspects to balance equitable access to the places, programs, flora, and fauna that we believe is necessary to exist and thrive.

Thank you!

Below are examples from the 2023 SHIFT Summit in Bend, Oregon.

Date/Time: Sunday, September 10, 4:00 – 6:30 pm

Exp S1. Forest Bathing in Shevlin Park

The SHIFT Summit will begin with an opportunity to slow down and interact with nature in Shevlin Park. Forest Bathing is not a hike; it’s more about being here and present than about getting there. This is not an experience for distance but rather for presence. There is minimal distance covered. Participants should dress appropriately (layers!) for the weather on the scheduled day. The walk will occur rain or shine except in severe/dangerous conditions.

Led by Certified Forest Therapy Guides:

  • Missie Wikler, Owner, R’oming Yoga
  • Amber Vermeesch, Associate Professor and Department Chair of Family & Community Nursing, UNC Greensboro

 Maximum Number of Participants: 30

Date/Time: Monday, September 11, 9:00 am – 12:00 pm

M1. Lava Lands Visitor Center and Lava River Cave Tour

Visit Newberry National Volcanic Monument for the opportunity to view lava flows and spectacular geologic features.  Participants will go on a short interpretive hike along the The Trail of Molten Land which meanders over the 7,000 year-old lava flow from Lava Butte.  The trail is just over 1 mile and includes some elevation gain.  Next, participants will visit the Lava River Cave which is the longest lava tube in the state. Initial access descends 55 stairs to a combination of flat boardwalk, uneven surfaces and stairways.

Led by: Discover Your Forest

M2. River Restoration Project Tour along Deschutes River

This experience will be broken down into two segments:

Indoor Presentation: The presentation will begin by discussing the district’s Deschutes River Access and Habitat Restoration Plan.  Topics will include discussion of the need for the River Plan, the plan development process, outreach and community engagement and implementation. Participants will leave with a thorough understanding of the plan and how it will support a community expressed desire for access, while minimizing impacts to the river. The second half of the presentation will focus on two projects the district has been working on along the river corridor.  The first is the recently completed Riverbend South Access & Restoration Project, which will serve as an example for future projects along the Deschutes River.  The second project is the McKay, Miller’s Landing, and Columbia Parks River Access Project which combines three individual projects identified in the River Plan, which include four river access points, into a single, larger project for the purposes of design and public outreach. These locations are home to some of the few areas in downtown Bend where access can be provided to calm sections of the river and are conducive to a multitude of uses.

Site Visit: The site visit will take guests down to the recently completed Riverbend South Access & Restoration project to see what access and restoration looks like in practice. Total walking distance will be approximately 2 miles.

W1. Hike at Ryan Ranch along the Deschutes River

Led by: Upper Deschutes Watershed Council

Learn about a large-scale restoration project along the Upper Deschutes River and how community organizations have engaged thousands of students in the process.  Join Upper Deschutes Watershed Council’s Education Director, Kolleen Miller, as she shares the history of the project and their approach to community outreach.  Participants will also get some hands-on practice with monitoring work.  Participants will hike along the Deschutes River Trail, approximately 1 mile.  The Ryan Ranch Restoration Project encompasses approximately 70 acres of historic wetland adjacent to the Deschutes River that was cut off from the river by a berm constructed many decades ago. The wetland and adjacent riparian area historically supported the largest contiguous area of Oregon spotted frog habitat along the Deschutes River and the area is identified as Critical Habitat by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The restoration project focused on removing the berm, restoring the riparian area, relocating the trail, and permanently restoring hydrologic connection between the Deschutes River and the wetland.

Maximum Number of Participants: 25

W2. Riley Ranch Nature Reserve Tour

Enjoy a guided hike throughout Bend Park and Recreation District’s Riley Ranch Nature Reserve. The park is host to many native plant species, migratory birds and wildlife.

Guided by BPRD’s Natural Resources Supervisor Joe Mauti and Park Steward Joel Lee, expect to hike roughly 3 miles of varying terrain including a steep incline/decline. Joe Mauti started his BPRD career as a seasonal employee and has worked his way up to the Natural Resource supervisor. Self-Guided Excursion Recommendations

Below are a few more experiences in and around Bend that you may want to explore on your own time.

Walk the South Canyon Trail

This 3 mile loop takes you out of the heart of the Old Mill and into the beautiful forest. You will enjoy traveling alongside the Deschutes River as it rushes through a beautiful canyon, cascading over rocks and logs. The trail is easily accessed from the Bend Park and Recreation District Office through Riverbend Park. The trail on the East side of the river is more narrow and becomes rocky in places, so hikers that find that challenging can simply turn around at the footbridge for an easier path back.

Pilot Butte Hike

Pilot Butte is an urban park in Bend with more than 7 miles of trail that winds around an extinct volcano. The butte offers a mile-long nature trail or paved road. Your reward for the steep climb is stunning 360 degree views of the high desert, snowcapped Cascade Range and city of Bend below. The trailhead is about 3.6 miles from the Old Mill.

Dillon Falls Hike

Dillon Falls to Benham Falls is a 6.5 mile out-and-back trail near Bend. Generally considered an easy route, it takes just over 2 hours to complete. This is a very popular area for birding and hiking.  Dillon Falls and Benham Falls are beautiful and will not disappoint. The trail head is about 10 miles from the Old Mill District.

Bend Ale Trail

The Bend Ale Trail can be accessed on your phone on a free app. You can plot your course, enhance your brewer knowledge, or pick a perfectly paired adventure for your trek through each territory.  With over 30 breweries in Bend, many of them award winning, your biggest problem will be where to start!

Limited spots will be available for some activities, so be sure to register early to sign up for your preferred Experiences.
